Disclaimer and Legal Notice

This is a legal notice that applies to every page of Victoria Crime News. By using this site you agree to read this notice and the rest of our terms.

1. We are not Victoria Police

Victoria Crime News is an independent news and commentary publication. We are not Victoria Police. We are not affiliated with, sponsored by, endorsed by or authorised by Victoria Police, the Chief Commissioner of Police, the Department of Justice and Community Safety, the Victorian Government, the Office of Public Prosecutions, the County Court of Victoria, the Magistrates’ Court of Victoria, the Supreme Court of Victoria, or any other Victorian or Commonwealth public agency. Any reference to those bodies on our website is a reference for the purposes of news reporting and commentary only.

The domain “vicpolicenews.com.au” was acquired by us after it had ceased operating. The current website at this domain is unrelated to any prior content that may have been published here. Where you arrive at our site through an old link, you are arriving at our independent publication.

For official statements, operational matters, missing-persons appeals, recruitment information, and community-policing programs, please go to police.vic.gov.au. We are not able to relay messages to Victoria Police or to any agency.

2. We are not an emergency service

Victoria Crime News cannot respond to crimes in progress, missing-person reports, family-violence incidents, mental-health emergencies, or any other emergency. If you need help right now, call 000. If you have information about a crime that has occurred but is not in progress, call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

If you or someone you know is in crisis, support is available 24/7 from Lifeline on 13 11 14, Beyond Blue on 1300 22 4636, 1800RESPECT on 1800 737 732 (national family-violence and sexual-assault counselling), and Safe Steps on 1800 015 188 (Victorian family-violence response).

3. General news, not legal advice

Everything published on Victoria Crime News is general news reporting and commentary. Nothing on this website is legal advice. Nothing on this website is a substitute for specific advice from a qualified Australian legal practitioner about your circumstances. If you are involved in a criminal matter, intervention-order matter, or civil dispute, you should speak to a lawyer. Free options include Victoria Legal Aid and your local community legal centre.

4. Presumption of innocence

Where we report on a person who has been charged with an offence, that person is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Reporting that a person has been charged is not a finding that they have committed the offence alleged. Where we report on a person who has been acquitted, that person is innocent. Where we name a person in connection with a matter that is still before the courts, we will not editorialise on guilt and we will not publish material that could prejudice a fair trial.

5. Suppression orders and protected identities

Victoria has a robust regime of suppression orders, statutory non-publication restrictions and identification protections. We comply with all of them. We do not publish material that would identify a child involved in protected proceedings, a victim of a sexual offence, a witness whose identity is suppressed, or any party covered by a court-ordered suppression. If you believe we have inadvertently breached a suppression order or other restriction, please contact us immediately and we will act promptly.

6. Accuracy and corrections

We make every reasonable effort to ensure that material on this website is accurate at the time of publication. News can change quickly. New information can emerge during a coronial inquest, criminal trial or appeal. Where we become aware that we have published something that is incorrect or misleading, we will correct the article and note the correction at the top or bottom of the page. To request a correction, please use our contact page.

7. Third-party links

Our articles may link to government websites, support services, court judgments and other third-party material. We have no control over the content of those external sites and do not endorse them. We provide the links as a service to readers.

8. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by Australian law, Victoria Crime News, its owners, editors, contributors and contractors are not liable for any loss, damage or cost arising from the use of, or reliance on, material published on this website. The Australian Consumer Law contains certain non-excludable consumer guarantees; nothing in this notice is intended to exclude or limit those guarantees.

9. Copyright

The original journalism, photography, and editorial design on this website is the copyright of Victoria Crime News. You may quote short extracts for the purposes of fair dealing (review, criticism, news reporting, research and study) under the Copyright Act 1968 (Cth) provided that you attribute Victoria Crime News and link back to the original article. Bulk republication without permission is not permitted.

10. Governing law

This notice and your use of Victoria Crime News are governed by the laws of Victoria, Australia, and the courts of Victoria have non-exclusive jurisdiction over any dispute.
