Victoria Police hunt offenders after alleged assault at Camp Sovereignty

Victoria Police is investigating an alleged assault at Camp Sovereignty, the long-running Aboriginal cultural and protest site in Melbourne’s parklands, after a 37-year-old man was treated for facial injuries. Police said in a statement that officers are appealing for information as they work to identify those responsible.

What police have said #

According to Victoria Police, officers were called to Camp Sovereignty following reports of an assault. Police said in a statement that a 37-year-old man was treated at the scene for facial injuries, and that inquiries into the circumstances are continuing. No arrests have been confirmed at this stage, and police said the investigation remains active.

Victoria Police said anyone with dashcam, mobile phone footage, or information relevant to the incident is urged to come forward. We have been told the investigation is being handled by local detectives, though Victoria Police has not confirmed the specific unit carriage of the matter.

Where the alleged assault happened #

Camp Sovereignty sits within Kings Domain, near the Shrine of Remembrance, and has operated intermittently as a site of Aboriginal cultural significance and political protest for close to two decades. It first drew national attention during the 2006 Commonwealth Games, when it was established as a protest camp highlighting Indigenous sovereignty and land rights, and it has since been re-established at various points to mark significant dates, including Invasion Day and Sorry Day gatherings.

The site includes a sacred fire that has been maintained by community members for extended periods, and it regularly hosts ceremonies, vigils and cultural events. Its location in a public parkland precinct means it can attract a broad mix of visitors, supporters and, at times, people unconnected to the camp’s cultural purpose — a factor that will likely form part of police inquiries into how the alleged assault unfolded.

No offenders identified yet #

VCN understands that as of publication, no person has been arrested or charged in relation to the alleged assault. Victoria Police has described the offenders as outstanding and said the matter is being treated as an active investigation. Because no one has been apprehended, we are not able to publish a description of any alleged offender beyond what police have formally released, and none had been issued at the time of writing.

Sources close to the investigation have told VCN that detectives are reviewing available CCTV and speaking with witnesses who were at the camp at the time. This masthead will update this article as Victoria Police releases further information.

The victim’s condition #

Police said the 37-year-old man was treated for facial injuries. VCN understands the injuries were assessed as not life-threatening, though we have not been able to independently confirm the full extent of his condition. Victoria Police has not released the man’s name, and in line with our standard practice, VCN will not seek to identify him.

Why Camp Sovereignty matters to this story #

For readers unfamiliar with the site, Camp Sovereignty is not a permanent structure but a recurring cultural and political presence that has become a fixture of Melbourne’s Aboriginal community life. It has previously been the site of tension involving council authorities over permits and land use, and has occasionally drawn counter-protesters, but incidents of alleged violence at the camp are rare and tend to draw significant community concern when they occur.

Community leaders connected to the camp have not yet issued a public statement on this specific incident. VCN has sought comment and will include any response received. Given the site’s significance as a place of cultural gathering, any allegation of violence occurring there is likely to be closely watched by Aboriginal community organisations and by the broader public.

What happens next #

Victoria Police said inquiries are ongoing and that detectives are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident, or who has relevant footage, to contact Crime Stoppers. No court date has been set, as no charges have yet been laid. Should a person be identified and charged, VCN will report on their court appearance in line with our standard practice — including that any person charged is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

We will continue to follow this story and will publish updates as Victoria Police provides further detail, including if any person is arrested, interviewed, or charged in connection with the alleged assault.
