Premier ‘deeply appalled’ after Indi MP Haines injured in incident

Victoria Police is investigating after the federal member for Indi, Helen Haines, was critically injured in an incident that police say they are treating as isolated, with no ongoing threat to the broader community. The Premier described herself as “deeply appalled” following the alleged attack, as tributes and condemnation flowed from politicians across the spectrum.

What Victoria Police has said #

A Victoria Police spokesperson told reporters at the scene that detectives were still working through an “extensive crime scene” and that the Major Collision Investigation Unit had been sent from Melbourne to assist. Police said there was “nothing to indicate at this stage” that the parties involved were known to each other, though the spokesperson stressed the investigation remained in its early stages.

“I can provide some assurance to the community that we certainly do not have any intelligence that there is any further or ongoing threat to any other person or the broader community,” the spokesperson said in a statement. “We are treating this as an isolated incident at this point in time.”

Victoria Police said officers were called to the scene and that investigators, including specialist crime scene personnel, would continue to gather evidence “to ascertain exactly what has occurred and how it has occurred.” No charges have been confirmed at this time, and VCN understands the investigation is continuing.

Who is Helen Haines #

Dr Haines has represented the north-east Victorian electorate of Indi since 2019, succeeding fellow independent Cathy McGowan. She has built a reputation in federal parliament as a methodical, community-focused MP, known for her work on a federal integrity commission and regional health policy. Colleagues from across the political divide have frequently described her as one of the more widely respected crossbench figures in Canberra.

It is that cross-party standing that appears to explain the scale of the political reaction on Thursday, with messages of support and condemnation coming from government, opposition and minor party figures alike.

Political reaction #

The Premier said she was “deeply appalled” by the alleged attack and offered her support to Dr Haines and her family, according to statements issued through official channels. Federal political leaders also issued statements condemning the incident, with multiple MPs describing Dr Haines as a dedicated local representative and a trusted colleague.

VCN has not independently verified the full detail of every statement issued by political figures on Thursday, and we are relying on official releases and public remarks reported by other outlets covering the incident. We will continue to update as confirmed statements become available.

What we know so far #

  • Victoria Police said officers were called to an incident in which Dr Haines was injured.
  • Police have described the scene as “extensive” and said investigators, including the Major Collision Investigation Unit, were working to establish the circumstances.
  • Police say there is no intelligence suggesting an ongoing threat to the community and the matter is being treated as an isolated incident.
  • No information has been confirmed by police about the identity, age or background of any person involved, and no charges have been confirmed.
  • Political figures, including the Premier, have publicly condemned the alleged attack and expressed support for Dr Haines.

VCN will update this article as Victoria Police releases further confirmed information. At this stage, details about exactly how Dr Haines came to be injured have not been made public, and we are not speculating beyond what police have formally stated.

Why police are being cautious with detail #

Readers may notice that Victoria Police’s public statements so far are relatively sparse — confirming that an incident occurred, that a crime scene has been established, and that specialist units are involved, without detailing precisely what is alleged to have happened or to whom. This is standard practice in the early hours of a serious investigation, particularly one involving a high-profile figure, and is intended to preserve the integrity of evidence collection and any future court process.

Our newsroom will only report allegations once they are confirmed either in an official police statement or in material before a court. Until then, we are deliberately avoiding speculation about motive, circumstances or any relationship between those involved, consistent with how VCN covers all active police investigations.

The road ahead #

Victoria Police has indicated the investigation will continue for some time, with the Major Collision Investigation Unit’s involvement suggesting examination of the physical circumstances of the incident will be a significant component of the inquiry. Should any person be charged over the incident, that person would be presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, and VCN will report any future court proceedings in line with our standard legal obligations.

We will continue to follow this story as confirmed information becomes available from Victoria Police and, if matters proceed to court, from the public court record.

The matter is currently under investigation by Victoria Police. No charges have been confirmed, and any person ultimately charged is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
